Each pair shows the same spot twice. First you see it as we found it, and then you see it after we finished the repair or upgrade.

What these plumbing photos show

Here’s what each project involved, so you can match it to the problem in your own home. Each one also links to the service page where you can learn more.

  • Water treatment upgrade: an aging multi-tank system beside a gas water heater, then a new water treatment system in its place. Read about water treatment.
  • Garbage disposal replacement: an old disposal out, and a new one installed and connected under the kitchen sink. See fixtures and faucets.
  • Hose bib and shut-off valve repair: a leaking outdoor hose bib and valve, rebuilt with new copper and a brass ball valve. See pipe repair.
  • Irrigation backflow preventer: a corroded device swapped for a new brass backflow preventer with a ball valve. Learn more about plumbing repairs.
  • Pressure regulator replacement: a new brass regulator on the main water line. After the install, we checked the water pressure with a gauge.
  • Shut-off valves and supply lines: old bathroom sink valves replaced with quarter-turn valves and braided supply lines.
  • Kitchen drain trap: a cracked, leaking slip joint, then a new trap with clean, tight joints. See drain cleaning.

Why Valley water shows up in so many plumbing photos

Our water is hard on plumbing. For example, the City of Phoenix 2025 Water Quality Report lists total hardness of 172–302 mg/L, or about 10–17.6 grains per gallon. That counts as very hard water. The report also notes that these minerals can leave scale in pipes and water heaters and on faucets and showerheads.

Pressure plays a part, too. The City of Phoenix requires homeowners to have a pressure regulator on their side of the water meter, and it’s the homeowner’s job to maintain it. So if yours is old or leaking, it’s worth having it looked at before it fails.

More photos from recent plumbing jobs

Not every job has a clean “before” shot, because sometimes the priority is stopping the leak. Still, here are a few more photos from recent work:

The corroded fitting above is a good example of what hard water can do over time. That crust is mineral buildup, and it often points to a slow drip. So if you spot something like it at a valve or connection in your home, a quick look now can save a bigger repair later.
